You can open the door and get back on the main path from here. Sunset Staff deals significantly more damage with Dark Orb but Witchtree Branch is significantly faster. . Black Witches Staff+10 is useful as it can cast sorceries, hexes and miracles. There are probably other great options, but I've never used Sorcery. Moving on along the main path and you'll soon encounter a couple of Pontiff Knights alongside a Firewitch.
